Online education (e-learning)

According to the European Commission, it is the "use of new multimedia technologies and the Internet to improve the quality of learning by facilitating access to resources and services, as well as exchanges and remote collaboration ". It starts with the use of the computer in the classroom to distance education while passing through the online provision of resources and teaching activities.

Remote teaching

Mode of teaching that aims to recreate the classroom environment virtually while offering students greater flexibility in space and time and the possibility of participating in group learning activities.

Synchronous / asynchronous mode

Online teaching can be provided via two modes:

  • In asynchronous mode : the teacher prepares the teaching aid and makes it available to the students. These students access the support each according to their availability
  • In asynchronous mode the teacher prepares the teaching aid and makes it available to the students. These students access the support each according to their availability.

C’est en fonction du contenu de l’UE ou de la nature des ressources que l’enseignant choisit l’une des options. L’enseignement en modes asynchrone et synchrone présente de nombreux avantages et inconvénients.

Advantages disadvantages
Synchronous
  • Promotes immediate feedback through the direct contact established between students and teachers.
  • Develop human contact.
  • Promote collaborative work.
  • Time and technical constraints (Challenges and/or technical difficulties, old equipment, power and/or connection problems, etc.).
Asynchronous
  • Offers greater flexibility to the student.
  • Increased cognitive engagement as students have more time to engage and utilize the resources available to them.
  • Each student works at their own pace.
  • When the unidirectional transfer (explanation, presentation, etc.), is done asynchronously, the teacher has more time to interact with the students during the synchronous sessions.
  • Students may feel less involved and less motivated without social interaction with their peers and teachers.
  • Students may feel less supervised.
  • Course content can be misunderstood or misinterpreted without real-time interaction.

Resource

  • Folder – it helps to organize files and a folder can contain subfolders.
  • Label – used to display information in a section: a few words or an image to separate resources and/or activities, or a long description or instructions.
  • File – it can be an image, PDF document, spreadsheet, sound file, video file.
  • Page – this is a page that the teacher creates with the HTML editor.
  • URL – it directs the student to web-accessible resources.

Activity

  • Workshop – it allows for peer review.
  • Database – it allows participants to create a bank of cards.

  • Assignment – it allows teachers to rate and comment on files submitted by students, or an achievement made online or offline.
  • Feedback – allows you to create and run surveys to collect feedback.

  • Forum – it allows participants to have asynchronous discussions.
  • Glossary – allows participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary.

  • Lesson – it allows content to be delivered in a flexible way, following different programmable paths.

  • Choice – it allows a teacher to ask a question and gives a choice of multiple answers.

  • Test – it allows the teacher to design and include tests (quizzes), which can incorporate correct answers and/or automatic feedback.
  • Wiki – it is a collection of web pages that anyone can create or modify.
