FORMATS

As with face-to-face, there are a wide variety of formats for online teaching. It is up to each teacher to choose the one that best suits their teaching unit.

Virtual classroom

Definition Teaching provided entirely at distance in synchronous mode.
Features and Considerations
  • This format requires a minimum of adaptation in terms of content and format.
  • Suitable for small groups.
  • The sessions must be dynamic and interactive to compensate for the isolation linked to the distance.
  • Recording sessions for later viewing is recommended.
  • Disadvantage : Social inequality, especially if registration is not guaranteed.
  • This format requires a good Internet connection and electricity as well as a suitable environment (away from noise pollution and sources of distraction).
Section of the Guide to consult Use in particular Phase 3 and Phase 3 of this Guide for the design of asynchronous activities and better management of synchronous sessions.

Dual-mode course

Definition dual-mode course is defined as a “training system where face-to-face and distance learning modes coexist simultaneously, which allows the student to choose on a weekly basis the delivery mode that suits him, depending on their needs or preferences. So, the teacher must ensure the different formats (face-to-face / distance / asynchronous) for each session
Features and Considerations
  • Adapted to teaching units open to external auditors.
  • Suitable for lectures given to large groups
  • The student chooses the mode (face-to-face or remote) that suits him.
  • Simultaneous management by the teacher of two or even three different audiences: students in the classroom, those synchronously in front of a screen and those who watch a recording afterwards. The teacher-student interaction must be adapted to the three audiences. This requires micro-planning of each session.
  • An additional workload for the teacher who must adapt his course to the 3 formats

Hybrid

Definition Hybrid learning is made up of educational activities that combine, in varying proportions, face-to-face sessions and distance sessions in synchronous and asynchronous modes.
Features and Considerations
  • This type of format requires adaptation by the EU (reviewing the pedagogical structure of the course, the implementation of learning activities to promote student involvement, and regular online monitoring, etc.). This requires a significant investment of thought, time and energy.
  • The activities offered online should not be considered as an additional workload but they must replace, in a thoughtful way, certain activities normally carried out in person.
  • The particular challenge when designing a blended course lies in the right distribution of online and face-to-face activities in order to find the right balance.
Section of the Guide to consult Section of the Guide to consult It is recommended that you follow all the phases of this guide for the design of a blended course.
